Loving-Kindness Meditation

One aspect of Buddhist teaching is the development of unconditional love towards all living beings, or “metta”. This is a selfless love that recognizes and accepts everyone’s flaws, with the understanding that this life (and beyond) is one big learning process to continuously become a better person, and everyone is on a different step in their own journey.

Here is the basic gist of loving-kindness:

Loving-kindness, or metta, as it in called in the Pali language, is unconditional, inclusive love, a love with wisdom. It has no conditions; it does not depend on whether one “deserves” it or not; it is not restricted to friends and family; it extends out from personal categories to include all living beings. There are no expectations of anything in return. This is the ideal, pure love, which everyone has in potential. We begin with loving ourselves, for unless we have a measure of this unconditional love and acceptance for ourselves, it is difficult to extend it to others. Then we include others who are special to us, and, ultimately, all living things. Gradually, both the visualization and the meditation phrases blend into the actual experience, the feeling of loving kindness.

I’ve found loving-kindness meditation to be the best way for me to release ill feelings towards others who I have been unable to work things out with. I intuitively understand that forgiveness is the best path forward, and this meditation has been helpful in bridging the gap between knowing that I “should” forgive and actually feeling those forgiveness vibes deep down (or “unburdening”, as it is sometimes called).

Here is what this type of meditation is about:

Metta meditation (mettà bhàvanà, loving kindness meditation) is a practice taught by the Buddha to both encourage and strengthen the ability to be more kind, thoughtful, gentle and loving.

To do this practice one sits in a comfortable posture, evokes a prayerful attitude and then thinks of oneself and wishes oneself well. Then one thinks of a cherished person, a neutral person, a disliked person and finally all people and likewise wishes them well in turn. Done with sensitivity and over a period of time, loving kindness meditation gradually develops a deeper self-acceptance, a strengthened appreciation of those one already loves, a warm and growing interest in casual acquaintances and less ill-will towards those one previously did not like.

The goal of this meditation is to read the recitation with feeling and with intention. If you find that you cannot “vibe” with this recitation, or that kindness towards all living beings doesn’t come naturally, that’s okay. A therapist or a Buddhist teacher might have wise words of encouragement, but it’s unfortunately not something I can help with, as I am only a web page.
